What makes Raya, Raya?
27 May 2019 |Hari Raya Aidilfitri is celebrated by the Muslim community and enjoyed by all Malaysians alike. It’s a time where all of us speak the same language of love and joy. Also known as Eid Al-Fitr, this festival marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. It falls on the first day of the 10th month of the Islamic calendar every year, which makes June 5th the first day of Hari Raya 2019. More than just a celebration, Hari Raya is the time to forgive those who have wronged or hurt us and start anew.

In Malaysia, the first two days of Hari Raya are public holidays. It is a common practice for Malaysians to go on leave for the rest of the week to have more time to spend with their loved ones. What are the fun things to do when we get together during Raya?!!
Visiting anyone and everyone
The best part of Hari Raya celebrations? Definitely the reunions and gatherings. It’s that time of the year where everyone we love and cherish will be present at the same place, same time. Just the thought of seeing them makes balik kampung (the journey back home) feel a lot faster.
Food. Food. And more food
Food makes everything much more wonderful, more so during Hari Raya. The feast is real during this festive season. You will find open houses almost everywhere, waiting for you to come in and indulge in delicious foods ranging from traditional Malay foods to one-of-a-kind kuih-muih (cookies & candies), and since it’s Raya, we have the license to eat all we want! (Just make sure to leave some for the rest.)
Put on matching clothes with the gang
On regular days, putting on traditional clothing will make you the most unique of the bunch. When it comes to Hari Raya, simply stroll along the neighbourhood and you’ll see green armies everywhere. Its group outfit season, not just for families, but friends as well. During Raya open houses, guests of all races often put on traditional Malay clothing too. It’s done out of respect, but also for the wefies! Who wouldn’t want to post baju sedondon (matching outfit) photos on social media, right?
Donate to the needy
Not everyone is lucky enough to experience everything Hari Raya has to give. What we can do is bring Raya to them. Make an effort to donate any leftover food or even money for new clothes to those in shelters or charities. A little kindness goes a long way.
Go for a simple getaway
Everyone’s back together and they’re all freer than ever. Sounds like a getaway waiting to happen, and we have just the destination in mind – Shah Alam! The state capital of Selangor might be a medium-sized city, but it’s never short of fantastic family-fun places to visit.
If you’re feeling adventurous, put on your sports shoes and head to Skytrex Adventure for fun outdoor games ranging from cycling to aerial obstacle courses.
If water parks are your go-to, there’s always Wet World Water Park. This family-oriented water park is full of rides that are suitable for both adults and children.
It is best if you arrive before anyone else to fully enjoy them. The more the merrier, but not during the festive season.
