Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam: A Day With Mother Nature

Located in the bustling city of Shah Alam, Selangor is Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam, Malaysia’s first agriculture park. However, it wasn’t always known as Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam (TBNSA).

Since it’s opening in 1986, it went through two name changes:

  • It was first introduced in 1986 as Taman Pertanian Bukit Cerakah. Till today, most locals still call it Bukit Cerakah.
  • After it was proclaimed by the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj ibni Hisamuddin Alam Shah Al-Haj in 1991, its name was changed to Taman Pertanian Malaysia Bukit Cahaya Seri Alam.
  • In 2007, it underwent another name change and became the Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam we know and love today.
  •
Inside the beautiful Shah Alam National Botanical Park are the challenging Bukit Sapu Tangan, the beautiful Animal Park, and many other smaller gardens such as the Cactus Garden, Tropical Fruits Garden and more!

Do take note that in order to enjoy what Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam has to offer, you will need to pay an entrance fee, which is at the price of RM3 for adults, RM1 for children, and RM1 for senior citizens.

Wondering what’s there to do there? We’ve prepared this activity list for you. Feel free to use this when you’re visiting Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam.

Enjoy the company of animals in the Animal Park

If you love being around animals, the Animal Park should be in your to-visit list whenever you come to Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam. The activities you can do here include petting and feeding the adorable animals, which are perfect for the kids! The animals you’ll find here include adorable ponies, porcupines, deers and birds. At times, you’ll spot wild birds and squirrels too. This 72-hectare animal park is home sweet home to many animals, so don’t be surprised to see them hopping around happily.

Go cycling around the botanical park

Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam is a popular place for cyclists, as there’s not only flat ground, but hills too. You can come here for some cycling during a relaxing evening, or challenge yourself by cycling up the hills and steeper roads. If you think about it, a bicycle is actually a good way to travel around the park to check out its other attractions. Either way, cycling around Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam is always a good idea.

Take on the challenging Bukit Sapu Tangan

Bukit Sapu Tangan is every hiker’s dream come true (or, nightmare: depending on how good of a hiker are you). The entire trail is properly tarred, very clean, and is a pretty straightforward hike. However, the steepness is not to be underestimated. Those who attempt to hike this hill should be both physically and mentally prepared. Waiting on top of the hill is a rather rewarding experience: a beautiful watch tower that gives you a bird’s eye view of the entire botanical park!

Drop by all the different gardens in the park

There are five different gardens you can visit in the park:

      i. Ornamental Garden
This is a place where beautiful flowers and shrubs are properly arranged for it to be viewed from a specially-made viewing tower! Fun fact: It’s the brainchild of a former Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia.
      ii. Spice & Beverage Garden
This one’s a little more educational in nature, as those who visit the garden will get to learn about the various health benefits of the plants in the garden. You can find plants like coffee, black pepper, nutmeg and more.
      iii. Cactus Garden
Always wanted to know how a desert cactus looks like? This garden is designed to look like a desert! There are over 145 species of plants here, with 15 of them from Malaysia.
      iv. Herbs & Medicinal Garden
As the name suggests, this is a garden for herbs and medicinal plants. Students often drop by to learn more about these types of plants.
      v. Tropical Fruits Garden
With the help of some of the finest agricultural technology, they were able to cultivate and grow various tropical trees that are (supposedly) unavailable in Malaysia. Head over there to experience it for yourself.

While Taman Botani Negara Shah Alam does require an entry fee, the experience is definitely worth the price, as what you’ll experience there is truly one of a kind. All that’s left to do is get a comfortable place to rest and recuperate after an entire day of physical activities. We recommend Concorde Hotel Shah Alam, a 4-star hotel with affordable rooms that come with amazing amenities and facilities, providing you with all you need to recover after a long day.
